I create sculptural ceramic wall art, ranging in size from 4"x4" to 28"x40". Starting with a large lump of clay, I place it on my slab roller and crank out a large slab that is 1-1/2" thick. It's now ready to cut, carve, glaze, and fire. My subject matter reflects my love of the Pacific NW. Most of my designs feature the cultural, physical and historical features of Whidbey Island- the flora, fauna, and historical structures. I work in my small studio,"Sweetbriar", often accompanied by my Golden Retriever, Briar Rose and two cats - Sammy and Clara. I started working with clay about 10 years ago, when we began thinking of building a house. I wanted to do all the tile work, and I did. And so begins the addiction to messing about with clay.
Prior to this, I was a professional violinist in the Seattle Symphony for 16 years until returning to school to earn my teaching certificate and becoming an elementary school teacher. Not long after completing my Masters Degree, I quit teaching and once again focused on my love of music - teaching violin privately and serving as concertmaster of the Saratoga Chamber Orchestra. My varied interests are reflected in my work. I am an avid gardener, naturalist, animal lover, birder, and artist. I live on Whidbey because I love the marine environment. Some of the subjects of my wall art include owls, ravens, herons, woodland birds, marine ducks, gardening, boats,(I lived on a sailboat for 15 years) marine life, flowers, trees, berries, and historic Whidbey structures. My ancestry is Irish and my passion for all things Celtic - art, dance, music, and more, often are depicted in my art. Often my work is described as whimsical. Creating my art makes me happy. My hope for you, the viewer, is that my work will make you smile.
